In this world of pressures and deadlines, fast paced racing around trying to take care of things and get some where, and with all the time saving, modern technology – I still seem to have less time then my grandmother did at my age!! If you can identify with any or all of these feelings of stress to get things done, then this post might be of interest to you.

When I was in my early twenties, I refused my doctors advice to ingest valium’s to alleviate a stress condition and instead chose his other option to take up a hobby. It was his belief that people who did not know how to relax would end up with stress related diseases in their later life. To make a long story short I chose crocheting. Over the years I have perfected a routine that when I am feeling the stresses of life closing in, I pick up my hooks. I have found an hour of crocheting does more for me then all the sedatives the doctor could have prescribed. I am not claiming this solution for everyone, (I am not a doctor of any kind and have no medical training) yet I do know what has worked for me for the last thirty years. All of us are different and will require different avenues to help us relax. But all the same I would like to share my routine.

Before going to crochet I make sure I have all the things I will need. There is nothing that spoils the mood more than having to get up and down every five minutes. The first thing I do is to put me on a kettle of water for some tea. I know that tea and relaxation are not technically synonym but to me they go hand in hand. I prefer Twining tea, although it is not the only brand I am partial to. Lady Gray is my favorite, although I have recently been experimenting with Chai tea’s.  I enjoy sipping on some hot tea while I work on my projects.

I also have a chair in my living room with a table and foot stool and that is where I keep all my crocheting equipment. I have a small bag next to the chair where everything is in place when I am not crocheting, but is easily accessible when I am wanting to indulge. You will want to choose a comfortable, quiet place to work that is well lighted.

I would like to suggest that on the days you are wanting to relax that you crochet with your favorite hook. For me it is Susan Bates, they have always been my first choice since my very earliest days of crocheting. With the added point on the head and the deeper throat, it just seems easier and quicker for my crocheting needs.

Second, I always pick a pattern that is easy, with no new stitches to learn if  learning new stitches  stresses you out. Make sure it is a pattern you are excited about crocheting. This is one of the reasons that I joined the Annie’s Hook & Needle Club. It gives me an endless supply of kits that are small, but with some new projects and some new stitches that I find, for the most part,  fun and a little challenging.

Third, make sure you chose a yarn you enjoy working with. There is nothing so frustrating as working with yarn that tangles or knots.

Next, if television distracts you there are other avenues to entertain your self while you crochet. Since I was a teenager, I have always had a love for books. I enjoy reading anything from biographies about famous people or maybe giving myself over to being lost in the world of Elizabeth Bennet or Jane Eyre.

I also enjoy reading spiritual books and an occasionally mystery with Jessica Fletcher. A  few years ago for Christmas I was give a Kindle, and with this E reader I was able to bring my love of crocheting and reading together. In the beginning I used the Text to Read option on my Kindle Keyboard. Then I soon discovered Audible. I got to try my first book free and then the first three months for half off. Now three years later I am still downloading books to listen to while I crochet and ebooks to read when I am not.

When I am not in the mood to focus on a book, then there is alway listening to music on my IPad Mini. What ever you choose, just make sure it is something you are looking forward to hearing and that it will relax you.

On days that I am really feeling the stresses of the world closing in, I will set and focus on my crocheting. I will not allow myself to think of any of the outside pressures just for that time. I focus on what I am listening to and on my crocheting. Then before long I discover I have spent the hour productively instead of allowing myself to become stressed. Then looking at my project and what I had accomplished out of nothing but a skein of yarn and a hook, helps me to deal with the rest of the day with a more positive outlook.
