January is passing quickly as I slowly, and one by one, am catching up on the crocheting projects that life helped me to get behind in. I cannot believe we are approaching the last third of the month. I have finished one of the kits in Annie’s Hook and Needle Club and even had time to fill the requests from some friends to duplicate the hat for them.

The Rib Stitch Ensemble, which was my 23rd kit from Annie’s, consisted of a knitting and crochet pattern. This enables you to create a stylish hat, scarf and mitts in the craft you prefer. The intermediate patterns were well written and easy to follow. Just make sure you read the instructions carefully and do not move ahead of them.

I was excited about receiving this kit because it came around the time I was looking for a hat pattern to crochet. The one thing I did not like about the pattern is that it was designed for a small head (19 inches in circumference) so I had to add four rolls to the middle and it fits my larger head perfectly. I was nervous about running short on yarn so I pre – determined that I would omit the mitts if I did. I was amazed to find that when I was finished there was even some left over. Fortunately, I was able to crochet all three even after enlarging the hat.

The chain stitch (The Chain Stitch) and single crochet (The Single Crochet) are the only basic stitches in the pattern. Then there are three speciality stitches; the single crochet drop stitch (Single Crochet Drop Stitch), the single crochet decrease (Single Crochet Decrease) and the front post double crochet (Front and Back Post Double Crochet).  That allows this to be challenging enough to be a true adventure in crocheting. The speciality stitches were explained fully and easy to understand.

The yarn was medium worsted weight dark blue yarn (4) and required a J and I crochet hook and a tapestry needle for completion. I really liked the yarn so I am disappointed to know I will not be able to buy it for future projects.

Since finishing the hat I have had several requests for a few more, which I have already finished. I have crocheted four hats to date. I do not know about the other two pieces, but I could easily see myself crocheting more hats.

With all of this in mind I am rating the kit a 9, losing one point for unmarked yarn. Would love to hear your opinions on the kit if you have received the same one.

Until next time, keep those hooks flying.
